Celebrity romance scam: AI-cloned love messages

A woman lost her entire life savings of $80,000 and sold her condo for additional $350,000 after falling for a scam impersonating actor Steve Burton with AI voice cloning. The fraudsters sent her videos and messages saying things like ‘I love you so much, darling’ in Burton's cloned voice. She believed it. After messaging with her for a couple of months, ‘a famous actor’ asked for money. She believed it and sent everything. ABC7 posted a video from which we extracted the audio of ‘Steve Burton’ speaking and ran it through our AI audio detector. The voice showed clear AI-generated patterns. It’s also noticeable how the detector highlights the generated part of the audio. This is deepfake romance fraud at its worst.

AI voice scams target lonely victims with fake celebrity personas. These synthetic voice messages sound authentic but destroy lives. Before trusting romantic messages from celebrities, check audio with a voice detector. Real stars don't ask for money.
